Roots Rock Reggae (1979) + Introduction

This very special screening will be introduced by legendary Jamaican musician, Stranger Cole in conversation with PBS’ Mohair Slim. Jamaica’s musical heartbeat at a defining moment in cultural history, Roots Rock Reggae is a landmark Jamaican documentary that has been rarely screened. Jeremy Marre takes viewers inside Kingston’s streets, studios, dance halls, and sound systems just as reggae music was shaping its identity and radiating across the world. Featuring performances and appearances from icons including Bob Marley, The Wailers, Jimmy Cliff, The Heptones, and Inner Circle, the film doesn’t just document the music — it captures the spirit, politics, and everyday life that gave reggae its power. With intimate access and unfiltered authenticity, Roots Rock Reggae remains one of the most important documents of the genre’s rise and the culture that forged it. Stranger Cole will be playing a one-off show on Saturday, December 13th at The Brunswick Ballroom. Tickets are selling fast. This film forms part of The Picture House’s BEATS WORKING FILM FESTIVAL, a festival that celebrates the best in music docs and concert films.Music DocumentaryPT1HPG
